Accident Sickness and Unemployment

Accident, Sickness & Unemployment insurance (ASU) is also be referred to as mortgage payment protection and will provide you with an income to meet your outgoings if you are off work sick, have an accident or are made redundant. It pays out a monthly benefit to cover your mortgage and other related costs.

Why do I need Accident Sickness and Unemployment?

You cannot rely on state help to cover your mortgage payments if you cannot work. There is no help for the first nine months of unemployment or disability for mortgages taken since October 1995. Existing borrowers only qualify for benefit if they qualify for Income Support.

Unless you have substantial savings, how long would you be able to fund your mortgage and/or your credit commitments if you were unable to work due to sickness or redundancy?

In these uncertain times, there is no such thing as a 'job for life'.

If you are self-employed or work for an employer with limited benefits on sickness, these plans should be considered as part of your financial protection.

What if I don't want both Unemployment and Unemployment cover together?

What if I don't want both Unemployment and Unemployment cover together?

Most policies will also have a 'deferment period' this is the time you have to wait to start receiving benefits from the ASU policy after you have become ill, had an accident or become unemployed. This can vary from having no exclusion period to 30, 60 or 90 days, occasionally even longer.

Do I have to go through a long application or have a medical?

No, the application for accident, sickness and unemployment policies is limited. There are no medical questions and we do not normally need any signatures for the new policy. The reason for this is quite simple. You will not receive any cover for pre-existing medical conditions. This is not just a get out clause, you wouldn't expect any insurance to be agreed if you knew you were about to make a claim!

Eligible for Accident Sickness and Unemployment?

You are eligible for an accident sickness and unemployment policy as long as you are over 18 and under 60 and you normally reside in the UK, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. You must also be in employment or self-employment for at least 16 hours per week and have been so for the last 6 months. This is because you would not allowed to claim for any pre existing conditions under the disability option and if under notice of redundancy or redundancy was imminent a claim would be rejected.

A full list of exclusions will be explained to you with the main features of the plan before any decisions are made. The most important of which are:

  • No claim for any pre-existing medical conditions
  • Not eligible if you are under notice of unemployment

Before applying for ASU cover, we recommend you check with your employer's sickness benefits as some companies will continue to pay sick or injured staff for a certain length of time which may mean that taking out a policy is unnecessary.

Whilst there are sometimes exceptions to all rules, we would never recommend anyone that is self employed even considers unemployment insurance as it would be very difficult to prove that you have been made involuntarily unemployed

How easy is it to arrange accident sickness and unemployment insurance?

Policies can be arranged over the phone in minutes with no signatures required. As these policies are advised by us rather than just being bought on-line we will ask you some eligibility questions to make sure you would have a valid claim should the need arise.
